By the Wonga Wonga, yesterday, there arrived, for a short stay in Auckland, and for rest from his labours previous to proceeding by next boat to San Francisco, Herr Band man, whose late tour through Australia, in company with Mrs. Bandman, and theatrical engagements there, have been a continued ovation. It is understood that this star in the theatrical firmament does not purpose making any engagement during his stay; but it is to be hoped that by some means we shall be treated to some of those impersonations of Shakesperian characters in which Herr Bandman is said to take the foremost rank of the age.
The ».!>. Go-Ahead was detained this day, and will leave the wharf for the Bay of Islands at 2 o'clock sharp to-morrow (Thursday) afternoon.
A very discreditable case was exposed today in the Police Court, being a charge of indecency in the cabin of the steamer Gemini. The details are unfit for publication, but great credit is duo to the captain and engineer on board for their determination to protect their passengers from insult.
Ward's Amateur Minstrel Company will give an entertainment in aid of the Lunatic Asylum to-morrow evening, who.: we hope to see a crowded house. This comp_.-_ ?-ktfh has been formed about four or five n.. -?■.*.-•-.
has made considerable progress under Usa management of Mr. E. Ward, and have given two entertainments with great surcess. We understand that it is the intention of the company to give several entertainments during the present month. We wish them every success.
On Monday evening a tea meeting was held, at the Whau Road Chapel, for the purpose of raising funds for repairs to the building. The meeting was largely attended—so largely, in fact, that at tea only half the number could bo accommodated at one sitting. After tea, the Rev. Mr. Wrigg opened the meeting. Mr. MoElwain read a financial statement, after which the meeting was addressed by Messrs. Ewington, Wrigley, Alton and Hobbs.
The Supreme Court was occupied the whole of yesterday in trying three men named Stone, Bennett and Esc-ott, for larceny and burglary, at Grahamstown. They were found guilty, Bennett was sentenced to two year's imprisonment, the other two prisoners to three years' penal servitude.
A dividend of 10s>. per share will be payable to shareholders) in the Caledonian Gold Mining Company'at hooii to-morrow.
A notice appears in our advertising columns in reference to the alteration in the time-table of Cobb and Co.'s Royal Mail line of coaches.
The library of Strasbourg, just destroyed by the bombs and shells launched by the Badeners contained no less thin 150,000 voiumes. On its shelves were to be found the incurables (!) formerly belonging tpitHe ancient Commftndery of _&. John of Jefusmern. Amongst the treasures-there preserved"was the MS. of Herrade de Landsperg, Abbess of Saint Odile, entitled " Hortus Deliciarum," which dated from the twelfth century, the miniatures of which furnished the most useful information to the history of art and costumes.
A musical and dramatic entertainment will take place at the Lunatic Asylum to-morrow evening. f\ { \
