ESCAPE OF A PRISONER FROM PAPAKURA.
We were yesterday informed by a gentleman from Popakura that during the previous night a prisoner, who was confined for some offence in the lock-up at that place, succeeded in making his escape and getting clean off. The man was a Maori, but our informant was finable to tell us what was his offence. It appears, however, that during the night he succeeded in making a liole in the side of the lock-up, or, as we are informed, completely knocking one side of the prison down, and when Gamble, the constable, went the nest morning, he found the bird had flown. Nothing has been heard of him since. The lock-up would appear to be but a very ricketty sort of an affair, if we can believe what we are told, but no doubt an enquiry will take pa c on the subject, when the blame will be fixed— if blame there be —upon the right shoulders.
