The Thames Advertiser publishes a report by Mr. P. V. Dixon, Mining Engineer, on the Pukorokoro coal- fields, situated near the Surrey Redoubt. Mr. Dixon states that the seam is opened up six and a-half miles from the sea, and that the approach is favourable. He believes the seam is an extension of that found in Waikato. Where cut, ther.e is a body of 7£ feet clear bright coal, well adapted for domestic purposes and stationary boilers.

An accident happened to Dr. Tassell yesterday in Symonds- street. Whilst riding his horse, the animal became alarmed by the flapping of a waterproof coat, to which he was not accustomed, and threw his rider. Dr. Tassell was not much hurt, but the horse started off at full speed down Waterloo Quadrant, knocked down a man near Government gates, and smashed through the fence round St. Paul's Church. Here an attempt was made, without success, to catch him, and he again started down the Crescent and up Queen-street, where he was finally caught, strange to say, without a scratch.
