While attention is being directed to the removal of ihe offensive nuisance arising from the Queen-street sewer, it is to be regretted that no consideration seems given totbepossibility of disinfecting the sewage and utilizing the deposit. We observe that the proposal has been made to the City Board ; but on the principle of omne ignotum ierribilc est, we presume that the proposal was too scientific in its aspect, and so dropped without receiving any consideration. There cannot be a doubt that this would be the only satisfactory means for the removal of the nuisance, and a total misapprehension exists as to the costliness of the appliances necessary for the purpose. The sewage may, as at present proposed, be carried out into deep water, but this is only a temporary alleviation of the evil ; for a large proportion of the deposit will be ejected again on the beach, and the evil will be reproduced. The mechanism and chemicals necessary for turning the foetid sewage into limpid water, and fertilising compost, can be provided at a smaller cost than any effective means for carrying the stuff into the stream, and once completed, from the exceeding richness of the de out tl c works will be self-supporting. "We would recommend that previous to the undertaking of any extensive means for the removal of the nuisance an estimate could bo obtained of the cost of this the only effective method of suppression.
