The Evening Star. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1870.

The purposes to which the reserve of the Albert Barracks may be finally applied will give grounds for a good deal of strife, and it will require the utmost faithfulness on the part of those entrusted with the charge of the interests of the people to carefully guard the reserve from intrusion. An application has been made by the Trustees of the Auckland Grammar School, to have a portion allotted Co that institution, with the buildings thereon, for Grammar School purposes There can be no doubt that no more deserving and appropriate claim could be made for a section of the ground. The institution is one of common advantage. Its situation should be central, and the locality should be one, from its salubrity, conducive to the health of our youthful citizens when engaged in the prosecution of their studies. All these conditions are to a high degree satisfied in the Albert Barracks' reserve. And if it were resolved that those grounds should be cut up for various useful purposes, we should strongly recommend that a goodly section should be given to the Auckland Grammar School. But if this claim is admitted, the door is open to any number of other applications, and the intention of converting this reserve into a public park may as well at once be abandoned. As this is the first application of the kind it should be carefully considered, not only in itself but in its consequences; and we trust that by those interested in the matter, and whose opinions will be taken into consideration as to the final disposal of the reserve, a distinct and unequivocal determination will be expressed that no application of any kind having for its object the appropriation of any portion of the reserve to any other purpose than that of a public park will for a moment be entertained.
