The Evening Star. SATURDAY NOVEMBER 5, 1870.

We are glad to learn thof arrangements have been made between Mr. Sniythe (Jlellev's agent) and the proprietors of the Diorama, by which the Wizard will be enabled to continue his seances next week in the City Hall. We are requested to slate that Monday next had been arranged many weeks ago-as that for opening with the Diorama, but that the proprietors have now kindly deferred it.

It will require no persuasion to induce a throng in the hall of the Mechanics' Institute on Monday evening next. The Superintendent may "have his faults, and must, doubtT less, like all men of energetic mind?, have enemies. But if the people of Auckland miss the opportunity of commending bis actions in the past, and encouraging his zeal in the future by sending him honorably in as representative to Parliament, this city will yet regret the result. We are fecoud to none in this city in desire for the establishment of protective principles as the vital! policy for Now Zealand ; but Mr. GHUies, though, as we think, mistaken on this subject, cannot be spared in Parliament, and no feelings of partizanship should be allowed to prevent our having on the side of our interests such thorough independence, so great ability, and so eloquent powers " are possessed by Mr. Gillies. An excellent and respectful audience was afforded to the Hon. the Colonial Treasurer. And we are sure that the respectability and good taste of- Auckland. will be similarly shown to his Honor the Superintendent. These two debaters have their little quarrel to fight. Let them fight; but Auckland wants both of them to bear his name in the House of Representatives.

The sub-committee appointed on behalf of the Mechanics' Institute to confer with the Council of'ths Auckland Institute relative to a union of the interests of the two institutions met with the representatives of the Council yesterday afternoon, and will report to a special meeting of the Committee of the Mechanics'.,lnstit\jte at 4 p.m. on Monday.

The Essay md Discussion Classi, V.M.C.A., met on Thursday evening last, when a discussion took place on the " Frar.co-Prussian War." The class adjourned for the usual recess, and will re-assemble about the end of February next.

The anniversary services in connection with the Prinpes-street Chapel, Onehunga, will be held to-morrow. The annual tea meeting will take place on the following Tuesday evening. The final meeting of the Tauranga Relief Fund Committee will be held at the Northern Club on Tuesday evening next.

The partnership hitherto existing between Messrs. Humby and Cater has been dissolved by mutual consent.

John Williamson, Esq., Curator of Intestate Estates, has been appointed administrator in the estate of Edward Rooke Hector, deceased.

A reward of £5 is offered by the Acclimatisation Society for the conviction of the person or persons who stole a nest of young thrushes from the Domain on Sunday or Monday last.

There will be a parade of the Auckland Rifle. Volunteers this afternoon at 5 o'clock, when every member is expected to attend.

We notice that the City Board authorities are re-channelling the western side of Albertstreet, so that in future the water will flow away more freely, and not remain to stagnate as it has been doing for a long time past.
