The s.s. Lord Ashley arrived at the Wharf at 5 o'clock this morning, and we are indebted to Captain Andrew for lace papers, from which we extract the following telegrams : — DTTNEDIN.October 31.—A fire broke out to-day in Jago's flax stores, which contained a large quantity of flax. The building and its contents were totally destroyed. They were insured in the New Zealand Company for £1035. A man fell into the fire and was dragged out nearly dead. Later.—At the fire to-day the man did not fall in but rushed.in, resisting all attempts at rescue. His name is Thomas Horman, a carpenter, and he now lies at the hospital, conscious but not expected to recover. He states that he was delirious at the time, having after a debauch, abstained for some days from drink. October 28.—Mr. McKellar, late Collector of Customs, Auckland, succeeds Mr. Hill, who proceeds to Auckland. —Mr.. Mervyn addressed hia constituents at Eoxburgh on Thursday. A vote of confidence was proposed but not put. —The recent hot weather caused great destruction among the trout, 73 died in three dayi.
