DREADFUL ACCIDENT.
A rEAßFtrii accidnnt, apparently the consequences of intoxicating drink, occurred some time last night at the precipice of Fort Britomart. Early this morning, as Mr. 8. Cotterell was passing towards the baths, he came upon the dead body of a man who had evidently fallen over the cliff, and which was lying at the base, between Fisherman's steps and the breakwater. It proved to be the body of John Elwood, a pensioner, who, with his wife, resided in Ban-;ick-street. The unfortunate man, who was 65 years old, had been drinking heavily since receiving his last pension, must have wandered into the grounds of th? fort, and accidentally gone over the cliff, which at this point is fifty feet in perpendicular heiglu. The body was quite dead on being discovered, and on Mr. Cotterell intimating the circumstances to the police, was removed to the dead-hoiiso, nnd at once identified. An inquest will be held before the District Coroner at 2 p.m. to-morrow.
