The Evening Star: MONDA Y, OCTOBER 17, 1870.

On Friday morning, several miners waited upon his Honor the Superintendent, at the Government buildings, to urge upon him the necessity of commencing some public work, to. give employment to the men who are at present idle. Mr. C. F. Mitchell, M.P.C., introduced the deputation, which consisted of Messrs. John Graham, J. Buckley, J. McVilley, M. Sullivan, and George Sayers. His Honor -conversed with the deputation for some time, explaining the difficulties in his way in commencing any expenditure of public money. He said that he would make inquiries into the matter during the day, and also communicate with Auckland by telegraph, and would be ready; to mcc.} a deputation on the subject on Saturday.— Advertiser.

On Saturday afternoon, his Honor the Superintendent, accompanied byCaptain Goldsmith, one of the visiting Justices, and Mr. Millett, Assistant Engineer, visited the Shortland gaol. The -ells and yard were inspected, the chief object-being to examine if there were sufficient security for the prisoners in custody. His Honor was of opinion, we believe, that the premises were not so secure as they ought to be, and various suggestions were discussed fWith"_that objeot. : We believe that several alterations will be made lit once. — Advertiser.
