A very serious accident occurred on Tuesday last at Kurativvhiti, near Oreytown, by which a very old and much respected settler was near losing his life. From what we can gather, Mr. Walton was in the stockyard when one of the cows rushed at him, knocked him down, trampled on his chest, broke several of his ribs, and inflicted such injuries to his lungs that his life was despaired of. Two medical men were called in as soon as possible, and Mr. Walton remained for a long time in an insensible state. He is not yet out of danger. The cow was not a vicious one, ami Mr. Walton hud frequently milked her on former occasions. The broken ribs having penetrated the lungs, it is feared that the unfortunate man (who is now well advanced in years), will never again thoroughly recover. Dr. Smith, recently from Wellington, and Dr. Spratt, have rendered him all the assistance in their power* The preliminary survey of the- Great Northern Kailway, it is understood, has been already commenced under Mr. Engineer Blacket, from Nelson. The survey party passed over the Hemutuka by Captain Smith's line on Friday last, and was expected to reach the Tauherenikau by Saturday evening. The Ministry deserve credit for the early action they have taken in this important matter, and the general desire is that the work may be thoroughly done in order that the boat route may be determined on.
Mr. W. H. Harrison is said to be about to take the editorship of the Grey Tliver Argus. . The Independent publishes a. full account of the consecration of Bishop Hadfield.
