Br the arrival of.the Stormbird in the Manukau we are in possession of Wellington files to the 11th inst., from which we give the following latest telegrams:— CHRISTCHUItCH. October 10.—The Press, this morning, published a letter. from the Hon. Mr. Gisborne, denying that the Government■'•tolegram :was compiled from that of the Press Association, stating that the reason lie.gave the'message to the Independent was simply to enable an anxious public to- learn the. news asispon as -possible. He also denies that the Government delayed the telegrams--of Stafford's speech at Timaru some time ago. The Press has a short leader on the letter, ;stating, that .it was not it that brought the charge, but the Otago paily Times; and blames; the. Government for delaying the Press messages until a Government message was sent through, and for supplying the message to the Independent, and so enabling it to get extras out before the opposition journals.—The Salt Water Creek Hotel was burned down on the Bth. The houso was insured for £250. The estimated loss is £50. The following additional entries have been received for the Metropolitan meeting for the Canterbury Clip :—Redwood's Peeress and Bashaw ; Stafford's Magenta and Mariner. Jockey Club Handicap : —E^dwood's Peeress and XXX; Stafford's Magenta and Volcano. Stafford's String arrived per Airedale on Saturday. About; forty horses have arrived for the; meeting.—Tlie foot-race between Austin arid Porter, for 2000 yards, to-day, was \\on by the former by three yards. Porter?had .100 yards start.
