ATTEMPTED INCEND I ARISM.

A daring- case of attempted incendiarism took place yesterday afternoon, but it wa3 fortunately frustrated. This time, the building sel-cted by the incendiary was St. James' school-room, in Wellington-street. This school is near to the church, and is kept by Mr. Mclntosh. Shortly before four o'clock, smoke and flame -was discovered to be coming out from beneath one of the windows, and it was naturally supposed that the fire was in the school-room, which at this time was deserted, t!.e boys and the master having (left, but no fire was to be seen in the room, and the people present on the 3pot were a good deal puzzled as to whereat came from. In the meantime it • was making progress, and had burst in several places through the weal her-boards, when it wa3 found to be raging between the lining of the school-room and the wall. A plentiful supply of water was obtained, and was very 3 iom got under, some of the weatherhoard* near the ground havin/beei) r.utjaway, with an axe, the better to got at the root of Ihe fire. It was then discovered that some straw, partially consumed, and paper were under the floor, where the fire had evidently been lighted, with the intention of burning down the building. We sincerely trust that the perpetrator of this dustairdly crime will be brought to justice, and after this attempt we are .certainly inclined, to believe that the rags, &c j could" have heen lighted', in Rutlandstreet, on FriJav night, with no other object than to burn down the adjoining buddings.
