LATEST NATIVE NEWS

THE NELSON AND OTAGA GOLD-

FIELDS

MEETING OF GERMANS AT DUNEDIN,

—£100' COLLECTED

The s.s. Taranaki arrived .in the Manukau early this morning. We have received through the courtesy, of Mr. Aloss the latest Southern files, from which we extract the following : —

DUNEDIN, September 20, 2.25 p.m. The General Government have offered the p.gents of the Tararua £100 to leave Alelbourne within 15 hours after the arrival of the next Suez Mail.

The German residents met last night and collected £100 towards the relief of the suf ferers by the war. CHRTSTCHURCH, September 17. Eiopement.—At Christchurcb, John Whincop has been sent to prison for eighteen months for appropriating the property of a husband whose wife he had absconded with to Dunedin.

NELSON,

KARAMKA AND MoTtTEItA GOLDFIELDS.— We have heard on reliable authority most satisfactory accounts of the grounds on Salisbury's Open, on the Upper Karamea, and also of the gold obtained from the Motueka river, in the neighborhood of the Baton. Notwithr standing the snow still on the ranges, a considerable number of men are making their way to the Upper Karamea, the success of those who have lately tried the ground being of the most satisfactory character. In ordeto allow of stock being driven there, the miners are cutting a track through the bush, from the head of the Pearce, by which they will get over the range at a much lower height than by ascending to the Loadstone by the old track. A large rush to Salisbury's Open is fully expected so soon as the weather shall improve and the success of those on the ground become known. The men engaged on the bars of tho Alotueka river are also reported to be doing remarkably well.— Colonist, Sept. 20. HOKITIKA, September 16. In the case of Burt, warder and gaoler, versus Tilbrook and Ives?, printers, late of the Tomahawk— an action for libel, damages £500 —the jury returned a verdict for the defendants. TARANAKI, September 22. The Blanche is atill lying off. All is quiet, and the natives appear to be peaceably inclined. The Nelson Evening says :—lt api pears that the correspondent of the Colonist, whose It Iter appeared in that paper on Friday last, has exaggerated the state of things at Taranaki, as t'-.c only information received by tho Government is to the effect that twenty Arawas had visited the Waikatos, their visit being paid without arms, and also with the permission of the Government. Titokowaru was to bo present at the gaeat meeting at Pariaka, but in no hostile spirit.
