Wo observe thifc there is a " coming man" for the vacancy in the representation of Newton. His back era ask the constituents to await the appearance of this mystical personage, and not to vote " either for the three-and-fourpenny lawyer, nor for the time-serving teacher of tin- si'i-at Polytechnic Institution." The " coming man" is independent withal, for " he doci : ot c.ire whether you elect him or not." We learn that the U. S. war steamer Resaca will be open to visitors after to-mor-row, the hours being from 10 a. m. till ■•unset. We have no doubt a large number >f our citizens will avail themselves of this opportunity of seeing the fighting arrangements of our American cousins.
Parliament having been prorogued, our representative-", returned by the Phoebe, are to be seen at every corner enduring the martyrdom of cross-examination oil the doings of the session.
We are glad to see 'hat a number of merchants have taken the initiatory step to early closing, and to their credit announce that they will " close their respective e.-tablishments at one o'clock on Saturdays, and. at five on oilier days."
The Carandini concert last night showed a house crowded to the door. It was under the patronage of the officers of the U.S. man-of-war Besaca, and the attendance of our citizens might almost be taken as a graceful compliment if respect to our visitors. The concert itself was charming as usual. To-night we are informed is the last of the Carandini concerts, and we are sure it will be an eminent success.
At the Prince of Wales Theatre last night the charming Jirish. drama " Green Bushes,' was produced to a good h«use. To-niglit the " Octoroon" will be repeated.

A large meeting of Germans was held last night at the Auckland Hotel, Mr. Bucholz, the German Consul, bein-,' in the chair. However parties may differ iv sympathy towards French or Prussian, it is no breach of neutrality to sympathise with the generous purpose of sending comforts to the wounded soldiers. Mr. Lawrance was elected secretary, and the meeiing was adjourned till Wednesday next. As will be seen from another column, a very interesting series of lectures, being " Sermons to the Young," has been commenced in the Wellesley-street Chapel: the first to be delivered to-morrow evening.
