WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 31,1870. f

A deputation headed by Mr. Nolan yeaterday waited on the Provincial Secretary, on beHalf of the Waiotalii Tramway Company. The plans of the proposed extension as drawn in the Provincial Engineers office were submitted to the deputation, who expressed themselves as not being justified in undertaking the extension, owing to the expense.

There was a very good attendance at the Prince of Wales theatre last night, " Leah" being successfully repeated. To-night Miss Bowring appears in " Narcisse, or the Broken Heart," supported by Mr. Steele and Mrs. Jackson.

J. C. Young, Esq., Clerk (o the Besident Magistrate's Court at the Thames, has declined a requisition signed by 228 electors, asking him to stand for the seat in the Provincial Council vacated by J. Mackay, Esq., resigned. From a recent notice in the " New Zealand Government Gazette," repealing the proclamation of Coromandel Court-house as a polling place for the Thames an impression wa3 abroad that Coromandel had been disfranchised. The motion was simply preliminary to the appointment of the Court-house as a booth for the Coromandel district itself.

It is exceedingly gratifying to learn that Mr. Withew is turning out excellent chimneys for lamps at his glass manufactory in Freeman's Bay. As he can produce them cheaper than those imported, it will be unnecessary to urge the wisdom of encouraging this very desirable local industry.

We are happy to state that orders hare been yesterday given for the immediate completion of the plans, already all but perfected, of the Kaipara and Waikato railways. As these works wiil be at once commenced, we anticipate that very shortly there will be plenty of work for all in want of such, to the great benefit of the trade of the city and district.

The p.s. Williams brought up from the Thames last evening 1530 ounces of gold for the Bank of New South Wales.
