ARRIVAL OF THE CITY OF MELBOURNE.

The C.N.Z. and A.R.M. s.s. City of Melbourne, H. Grainger, commander, arrived in harbour yesterday afternoon, with the English mail via California. She left this port on tho 7th ult., at 2 p.m., for Honolulu, with mails and 105 passengers. Experienced throughout the passage a continuation of the finest weather, and arrived at her destination at 2 p.m. on the 23rd ult., making the passage in 17 clays. Finding the s.s. Ajax waiting, immediately exchanged mails, passengers, and cargo. She sailed on the following morning (Sunday), at 10 a.m., for San Francisco. The non-arrival of ship overdue with coals caused some detention, and prevented the Oi y of Melbourne leaving until daylight of tho 26th. Had fine weather and made good progress up to the 4th inst., in Int. lOdcg. 59min. S., long. 170deg. 57min. W., when the cross head of ihe after engine broke, and rendered it \iseless for the remainder of the voyage. From that date she progressed favourably with one engine, her average speed being 200 miles per day, the winds and weather having proved favourable since the accident. Made the Poor Knights at 5 a.m. yesterday, and arrived at the wharf at 2 p.m.; the downward passage occupying 18 days 9 hours.
