THE BUDGET.
j Wellington/ July 21, 1.34 p.m. The finance proposals of the Government were carried without a division in the House last night.
The Colonial Treasurer submitted a modification of the scheme originally proposed. The modifications are as follow :—
1. The schedule in the Eailway Bill to be erased.
2 No railways to be constructed until approved by the House.
3. The Loan to be £4,000,000, including the £1,000,000 which the Imperial Government has undertaken to guarantee.
4. The provinces to be consulted during the recess regarding the necessary railways. 6. £1,000,0U0 to be set apart for immigration purposes.
6. £luo,ooo to be set apart for the purchase, of n itire lands.
, 7. £100,000 to be appropriated for the purpose of providing additional water-supply on the goldfields of the colony. ,
8. Protection to bo an open qnestion. .9. Annual appropriations for defence, though fire years' expenditure fixed. 10. Tlie bonds to be sold at rates yielding not above 6 (six) per cent, to buyers.
.11. A Reciprocity Bill to be passed imposing difi'ereutial duties. The Hon. the Colonial Treasurer in b* reply made a brilliant and exhaustif* *pe^n> WBich Iwteil ft>w hour*.
