The Evening Star. SATURDAY JULY 9, 1870.
We were gratified to see that Mr. Byan was rewarded last night, by a crowded house at the Prince of Wales Theatre, on the occasion of lm benefit; and we are surs he must have felt proud to see that his past endeavours have been met with such warm recognition at the hands of the Aucklaud public. At the cod of the drama, " The Moral Brand," which was played well, Mr. Eyan was loudly called for, ;ual on leading forward Mrs. Hill, that lady was showered witn boquets. We think Mr. Eyan might have addressed a fetv words to his audience, but suppose he had hardly recovered from his late "death." A dance by Miss Gre.enless, some capital buffo singing by Mr. Morgan, and the burlesque of "Macbeth,* brought the evening's entertainment to a close.
There was a capital attendance at the Theatre Royal last night, it being for the benefit of Master Johnny and Miss Minnie Gourlay. A yacht va'ued at £10 was given away to a man ia the stalls who happened to hold the lucky number. VVe understand this talented family are about to- make a farewell lour through the provinces, and we are sure their endeavours to amuse wi!l bo rewarded as they deserve.

A cruel assault was perpetrated at the Thames on '! hursday evening. A man named Wallis, manager of the Poverty and Charleston, and who lodged on the bench between Shortlaiid and Granamstown, was disturbed towards night by some noise. He left the house, and soon afterwards got engaged in a dispute with one Johnston. A fight ensued, and Johnston got Wallis down, and kicked him in the most brutal manner. Wallis's spine was so much injured that he has since become paralysed, and is at present in the hospital. Johnston is in custody.
