PAINFUL SHAFT ACCIDENT.
An accident of a painful nature occurred on the Waiotahi yesterday, when the child of a miner named Vale narrowly escaped, a death by drowning. It appears that as a young man named Morris Moss Was proceeding up the Waiotahi, lie heard the skriek of a female in distress, and on proceeding to tho spot from whence the cries came, he found that the poor woman had lost her child, who had. fallen into an old shaft close at hand. The young man at once volunteered to descend the shaft in search of the child, although it wa3 some 60 or 100 feet in depth. Another man at hand volunteered his services, and tho young man was lowered by means of a rope some sixty feet, when he discovered the poor child floating on the water, its dress having caught on some projecting rock, and so sustained it above water until assistance came. How it escaped the sides of the shaft in falling such a depth is a mystery, but the infant was restored to its heait-broken parent none the worse for the terrible fall. From our advertising columns it will be seen that the parent of the child returns her sincere thanks to the young man who so courageously de- j Bcended the shaft in search of the child. — Advertiser. j
