ARRIVAL OF THE WITH THE ENGLISH TELEGRAMS, VIA SAN FRANCISCO.
ENGLISH NEWS to MAY 9.
The C.N.Z. and A.M. Company's powerful s.s. City of Melbourne, H. Q-rainger, Esq., commander, arrived in harbour this morning, punctually to date. We are indebted to Mr. R. Newman, purser, for the early delivering of our files and the following report:—
The C.N.Z. and A.M. Co.'s s.s. City of Melbourne, H. G-rainger, Commander, with the Australian and New Zealand mails, together with a large number of passengers, left Auckland on the 4th ultimo, at 4 p.m., for Honolulu. During the sth and 6th, encountered a heavy easterly gale, with high, confused sea, which caused her to labour heavily and ship large quantities of water, thereby drowning a large portion of her live stock, and causing considerable injury to her stores. On the 7th, experienced more moderate winds, and from, •thence throughout the passage had very fine weather, with alternate light and fresh breezes from the N.E. These winds prevailing throughout, together with the gale encountered after leaving Auckland, considerably retarded the passage, and caused her arrival at Honolulu to be later than schedule time.. Arrived: there on the 22nd ultimo, at 7 a.m., the passage occupying 18 days 14 hours. On arrival, found the b.s. Ajax, of ~1S»00 tons, waiting to receive mails and passengers, and with the intention of leaving that day, but being Sunday, and no business transacted beyond the exchange of mails and passngers, her sailing-was postponed until Monday', at 9 a.m. The coaling of the City of Melbourne could not be commenced until Monday, from the same cause, and owing to the natives not being accustomed to working coals, was not completed until Tuesday, 24th, at 6.30 p.m. Such arrangements have been made, that, in future, twenty-four hours will cover all detention at Honolulu. 7.30 p.m., discharged pilot and proceeded. Had fine weather, with light favorable winds, until the morning of the Bth, when it blew hard from the S.W.| with high head sea, which continued until noon of the 10th, when moderate N. W. winds and fine weather, with a S.W. swell, was experienced. 11th, at daylight, sighted the land. 11.30, a.m., passed the Little Barrier, and arrived at the wharf, at Auckland, 1 p.m. Passage occupying 16 days and 17 hours.
