POLICE COURT.—This Day.

(Before T. Ritchie, Esq., and It. F. Porte"?, Esq., J.P.s.) DBT7NKENNBSB. James Johnston and Anne Swift, for third offences of drunkenness, were each fined 20s and costs, or to be imprisoned seven days. LAEOENT. John Tackabury was charged with having, on Wednesday last, stolen from Mrs. M. A. Firth one gold, brooch, value ss. Mary Ann Firth deposed: lam the wife of Josiah Firth, residing in Wellesley-street. Saw prisoner in my house on the Bth inst.; he . asked me for a match to light his pipe. He then went into my bedroom. I told him to go into the kitchen and get a match. He then went into the kitchen, and went quickly out. He was not more than two minutes altogether in the house. Did not see him since till now. Next morning I missed a brooch. The brooch produced is mine, that was stolen. It is worth about 3s 6d or ss. I informed the police.

To prisoner: It was between three and four o'clock on last Wednesday afternoon.

Constable W. Halloran deposed : I arrested the prisoner on the Bth instant for drunkenness. On searching his pockets I found the brooch now produced; it has since been claimed by last witness. This morning prisoner said he had purchased it for two shillings, but did not know from whom he had purchased it. Prisoner stated that he had purchased the brooch in the street from a hawker for 2s. Sentenced to, 14 days' imprisonment with hard labor. UEPOTTNDINa ACT^' 1867.' P. A. H. Grainger, charged with a breach of the above Act, by allowing a horse to stray in Vincent-street, was fined 10s and costs. Matthew Grace, for allowing two horses to stray in the public streets, was fined 10s and costs. W. L. Eodgerß, for allowing -a pony to stray in Nelson-street, on the 3rd of June, being a second offence, though after the lapse of two years, was fined 20s and costs. The Court then rose.
