THE ACCIDENT TO THE ROYAL ALFRED.
The following is the engineers' report in reference to the late accident to the p.s. Eoyal Alfred:—
" Auckland, June, Bth, 1870,
" Sir, —We have the honor to report that wo have this day examined the cylinder on board the p.s. Royal Alfred, with a view to ascertain the cause of the damage. " There can be no question as to the immediate cause of the breakage. We find the after bolt of the piston-head broken at the end of the thread. The sudden breaking of this had thrown the whole weight of the piston and pressure of steam oh the bolt at one end of the black cover being thus released, it bent upwards, freeing the piston rod from the crank pin, and, consequently, the piston on its descent passed through the bottom of the cylinder. "We are of opinion that no blame in this matter can be attached to the engineer in charge.
" We hare the honor to be, " James Stewabt, Inspector of Steamers. " John, Black, engineer, Duke of Edin- " burgh, " Thos. Bennett, chief engineer, s.s. Hero, "To Mr. S. H Smith."
