THE S.S. GO-AHEAD.
The little Go-Ahead has long been well known in Aucklandj,.waters,-having been JUployed in various trades, chiefly in tne collier line, for some years. ...Her.,model was always a subject, for, admiration, but her
engines being but weak, site never got her name up as a fast boat. Some; little time ago she was purchased by Mr. S. H. Smith, since which time she lias received a complete over haul in every respect, chiefly, we believe, with a view to being placed in the Wangarei trade. In consequence of-tl—. accident to the Royal Alfred yesterday/'howgjyt.r, she will be placed upon tho Tharine-. line,':_i-..the meantime. The Go; Ahead hasite-^ived a new boiler of supcrio.*.b-ake, ,'and of a: size that will produce an abimdaut, supply,. of.Vs.eam. Her engines hav^'rbeen 'alteredjV and improved, and her pistons, &0., are new.' AlLthese additions and renovations;. Will; greatly'add to her speed, < which was her great,, aria in fact, only need. . \ As far as passenger accommodation is con-; cerned, that department has iiotheeiirieglected.* A handsome saloon has been'b'Ctil-' amidships, fitted with mottled kauri, and containing a' number of sleeping be.rths. The whole is made comfortable with l_<air seated cushions, arid a cedar buffet adorns' the apartment, arid affords accommodation for steward's supplies. The saloon is surmounted by a bridge. The ladies' cabin is placed aft, aud is also fitted in the same manner, and found in "all con-',' veniences. The fore cabin is roomy, oakt grained, and varnished, and looks extremely; comfortable.
The Go-Ahead is rigged as :a topsail schooner, the spars having formerly belonged, to the Royal Alfred. She is now one of the. prettiest little steamers in the colony, and we! both hope and believe that she .will prove 1 profitable. Her working expenses will be small, and she is adapted for carrying a large cargo, and is well ,* suited for. cattle. Her speed was tested on Saturday, under not the* most favourable circumstance, when she exceeded the expectations of her owner. Coming up from Brown's Island she passed the Duke of Edinburgh quite comfortably.
The Go-Ahead is to run to the Thames during this and next week, until the Alfred has received an overhaul, after which s'ae will be placed in the Northern trade. • .
