ACCIDENT TO THE ROYAL ALFRED.
An unfortunate and unaccountable accident occurred to the steamer Royal Alfred, yesterday, on her voyage doWn to the Thamas. Whilst off Tararu, the cross head brass piece at the head of one of the pistons snapped, and as the accident happened during the upstroke, the piston came down With great force, and knocked out the bottom of the cylinder. The consequence was that the vessel had to complete her up trip under one engine. The real extent of, the damage is not yet known, as there lias been no time for a thorough examination. It' is much to be regretted that any %uch thing- should have occurred, as the Alfred is a favorite boat on the Thames line, and her owner has been at no small pains and' expense to accommodate the travelling public. The Duke of burgh has, moreover, only' just been laid up. The Go-Ahead is, however/completed, and will be at once placed on the lino until the Alfred canixe repaired.'' ' '-'
