WELLINGTON, Wednesday 5. p.m. A MAN named J. D. Benge has been cooimittted for trial for einbezzehnent of money belonging tio his employers. Messrs. W. G-. Turnbull, of Wellington ; Thomas Erazeiy, Otago; Mr. .Waterhouse, Wellington j J. Wrigley, Nelson ; and James Williamson, Auckland, have been called to the Legislative Council by His Excellency the Governor.
Mr. Jackson, of Wan»anui, has bought the steamer St. Kilda, for the cattle trade. The s.s. Taranaki has come out of dock, and arrived at Lyttelton. ■. '■ A Dunedin company, with a capital.of £50,000, is being formed to purchase the plant of the N.Z.S. Co. ' Mr. Collie has had an interview with the Canterbury and Otago Chambers of Commerce, the result of which was satisfactory as to supporting a service with Wellington as the port of call. Resolutions have been tabled in tke Otago Provincial Council, recommending a union of that 2)rovince with CanterburyDUNEDIN, May 14. Mr. Brunton, C.E., goes home to negotiate for the Southern Trunk Railway Loan.
In the Provincial Council, notice has been given of a motion to the following effect: — " That, in the opinion of this Council, it would be of great importance to the future prosperity of every interest in the province that a line of steamers should be established between Otago and San Francisco* In the event of Mr. Collie making arrangements with Victoria, the Council is of opinion that the Provincial Government should offer a subsidy on condition that the steamers call at Otago on their way to Melbourne and back, and application should be made to the Assembly to refund the subsidy out of the general revenue of the colony. Canterbury shouid be asked to contribute a portion of the proposed subsidy."
The Chamber of Commerce recommends alterations in the bankruptcy laws, the principal being the abolition of the (iebfcor's power to petition, and the adoption of the English principle of payment of 103 in the pound, future acquired income beiug set apart to make up the dividend j inferior courts to have jurisdiction up to £300 ; prosecutions for fraud to be conducted by public officers, and at public expense.
