SHOCKING MURDER.
A MAOEI WOMAN STABBED BY
HEE HUSBAND
THE MUEDERER HAS FLED. A Coboneb's inquest which took place at Waiuku, on the 17th instant, on the body a Maori woman named Uawina, who was murdered by her husband on the night of Saturday last. The husband had always borne a good character previously, but was. given to occasional fits of drinking. As may be imagined, the affair caused considerable excitement in the neighbourhood where the crime was perpetrated, there being a large number of natives present at the inquest, about fifty of them having come from the Waikato on purpose to attend it. Much sympathy was manifested for the deceased, who appeared to have been very generally liked.; and the natives are fully of opinion that the murderer—who after the committal of the crime fled from the neighbourhood —is deserving of death. After an examination of several witnesses, the jury returned a verdict of wilful murder against the husband, whose name is Martena Te Rakitangi. We trust the law will be at once put in motion, and the murderer speedily brought to justice to answer for his awful deed.
