WELLINGTON, April 13. Mr. Collie, the agent for Mr. Webb, who is on a visit here, regarding the new mail route has been seized with a severe illness.
A very large and influential meeting of merchants and other parties interested was held to-day, to consider what ought to be done in connection with the object of Mr. Collie's visit. It was resolved to invite him to another meeting, to be held as soon as his health will permit.
Mr. Collie proposes to make Wellington the port of call, if he succeeds in arranging with the New Zealand and Victorian Q-overn-menfc for the service, Melbourne being the terminus.
'J he subsidy required for a monthly service is £150,000. On this the American Grovernment will pr bably give £80,000. Mr. Collie says he will bo ready to commence the line one month after the contract i 3 signed. He intends to visit the Southern ports.
A committee has been appointed to draw up a memorandum setting forth the advantages of Wellington as the port of call for New Zealand.
April 11. A man named Jnmcs Tolmie has been killed, and another named Lonis Kingstone dangerously hurt by rolling a log at Port Chalmers. William Wetherall, who went mad in consequence of Dr. Carr's mesmeric treatment, has recovered reason. A public meeting about the new steam company will be held here to-night. Kobert Pharnzjn has been appointed Crown Lands Commissioner of the Waitotara and Patea districts. Tricker's release is confidently expected, as it is known that the evidence of his alleged confession has completely broken down under cross-examination. NELSON, April 13. Prospectors marie application on Monday for a new reef at Wangapeka, distant a mile from Cuiliford's. The reef excels Cuiliford's in richness, and has caused much excitement at the township. The prospectors have been watched and shepherded all night by parties of miners. Trustworthy reports speak of Cuiliford's reef as turning out very rich. Mr. Sewell sails for "Wellington, per Tararua, to-day. HOKITIKA, April 11. The Christchurch coach arrived to-day. She was detained at the Otira Q-eorge from Saturday morning to 6 a.m. to-day, in consequence of floods. Rocky Point, on the Teremakau, has been washed away. There is heavy snow now lying on the ranges. CHRISTCHURCH, April 11. The nomination for the Superintendency took place to-day. Messrs. Rolleston and Moorhouse were proposed. The show of hands was in favour of Mr. ; Moorhouse. He said in his speech that he would contest the election if the residents in , province showed that they wanted him. The general opinion is that he will contest the election.
