NARROW ESCAPE FROM DROWNING.
A narrow escape from drowning ocmim. a the afternoon of Good Friday, at Cox's C °t A number of lads were amusing theinsel bathing, when one of them suddenly threw his arms and went down into a deep hoi which he was swimming at the time V" companions set up a loud cry of alarm « j Mr. Brophy, of the Newton Post oE' S d was passing at the time, on learning what hsrf occurred, at once threw off part of his clothiri and plunged into the stream. The lad 1 l disappeared for the second time as M Brophy sprang to his rescue, but that eentE' man immediately dived after him arui fortunately succeeded in bringing hin to the surface. It was found when the suffere* was taken safely ashore that he was in a ver' exhausted condition, but the usual remedies being applied as far as possible under the circumstances, soon came round, and was enabled to go to his home in the course of an hour or so. We have not learned the name of the lad, but we cannot allow the gallant conduct of Mr. Brophy to pass without notice and we trust that some day—and that very shortly—steps will be taken to ensure the receipt of the Royal Humane Society's medal to those persons in our midst—and they are not few—who have distinguished themselves at various times in saving life.
