Sandall was charged by Sergt.Maior Morrison with .a -.breach of the 13th section of the Municipal Police Act, in selling three pounds of meat of aiTunwholesonie tendency, m the .9th day 'of "April. I . \ ..' " . Mr. "heehaii appeared for the defence, and pleaded guilty. ; He -showed that the meat, which merely contained "jumpers/ had been imported from Hawke's Bay as - preserved mutton, and its, condition" had' been unknown, to defendant. Mr. Naughton, in reply, stated that it was an aggravated case, as the inside of the meat was perfectly rotten. The Bench, after speaking strongly of the enormity of the evils likely to result from the want of care regarding the sale of diseased ment, sentenced the defendant to a fine of £5, or to be imprisoned for one month. SMASHING- "WINDOWS. Walter Town send was charged with breaking a pane of glass, value 18s. Pleaded not gulty. Walter Dudley, examined by Mr. Naughton, deposed: lam proprietor of the Prince Alferd Hotel. Know the prisoner; saw him at my place last night at five minutes-past eleven. He had come in with another, who ordered beer for him. The gentleman paid for it and left, when prisoner commenced using improper language. Assisted by a gentleman, I put him and another out, and we closed the doors. They commenced battering the shutters and house. I saw prisoner take up stones and say he would 'knock.- the d d place in. I rushed into the bar arid bade Mr. Dudley get out of the bar, when instantly a stone whizzed past through the window, smashing it. There were several present in the outside. We followed down, street after prisoner, who had run away, and found him in the hands of a constable. The stone produced is that which passed through my window. Bobert Maxwell Daly, examined by Mr. Naughton, deposed : I am a constable in the Armed Constabulary. Was on duty in Hob-son-street about a quarter to twelve. Heard a noise as if a person kicking at doors and shutter?, and immediately after a crash of glass. I went; clown the street, and saw prisoner running as hard a» he could from the direction of the hotel. The other man, who was nlso running, got away. Mr. Dudly then arrived and gave him into custody. By prisoner : You were first, the other man was after you. Sentenced to be fined £5 and costs, or to be imprisoned one month with hard labor. . LARCENY. John McClintock and Thomas Brown, alias John Eobson, were charged by James Johnson with having stolen from the shop of Combes and Johnson, on April 12th, six shirts, value 18s. James Johnson examined by Mr. Naughton, deposed : I am a clothier carrying on business in Queen-street. Missed half a dozen shirts from the shop on Tuesday last, between halfpast ten and half-past twelve. It was from the outside of the window. Saw them there myself at half-past ten. They were made up in bundles of half a dozen each. Missed only one bundle that day. About half a hour after giving information I saw tbcm in a house in West Queen-street. The shirts produced are those stolen. They are my property, and valued 18s. By prisoner : Did not see either of you at the shop ; tlfere are private marks on some of the sLirLs. ! ; ■ John Wrigg deposed : I am a boiler maker; was in Queen-street near Mr. Johnson's premises on Tuesday last; saw the two prisoners near the premises of Coombes and Johnson ; saw them take the bottom bundle of shirts and carry it away; they went up Wyndhamstreet and came down West Queen-street, and abou*, the centre of the street turned to the left. The shirts produced are hike those stolen. By prisoner : Did not catch you because I was in a hurry, and I should have had a queer bundle if I had taken hold of two like you. Am perfectly sure I saw you take the shirts and carry them away. Mr. Naughton stated that McClintock hac been over and over before the Bench, and punished for similar offences ; for Robson, he could only speak from hearsay. Sentenced to be imprisoned each for six months with hard labour. ASSAULT. Daniel M'Kay was charged by James Aggers with having, on the Bth instant, struck him and knocked him down with his fist. Mr. Shechan appealed for defendant. There was a counter charge of assault alleged to have been committed by James Aggers on Daniel M'Kay, but both cases were withdrawn. The Court then rose.
