SERIOUS ACCIDENT IN OFFICIAL BAY.
A very serious accident occurred about "nine o'clock yesterday morning to a.half-caste lad named Edward Yates. The lad had just been Water-rig ahorse near the Wynyard Pier, and whUeion the .beach he slipped off the animal, and fell under its fore-feet. The.horse trampled upon his chest while the boy was lying on his back, breaking three of his ribs, and otherwise severely injuring him. Assistance was speedily 'procured, and a constable carried him to the house formerly, occupied by Colonel Beatson,
but lately taken possession of by a number of natives. Dr. Nicholson was at once sum. moned to attend the sufferer, whom he found to have received severe internal injuries. Besides the broken ribs, the boy was suffering from a compression of the chest, which almost pre. vented him getting his breath, and Dr. Nicholson thought it doubtful whether he could recover. On enquiring as to his condition late last night, we learned that he was still in a dangerous state.
