The Evening Star: MONDAY, MARCH 28, 1870.
Feom presure on our colums we are obliged to hold over our Leader, together with some local and general news, and correrpondence. We are glad to observe that the popular patronage of the last trip to the Kawau has encouraged arepretition, and that on Thursday next, tho William will convey excursionists to lUO.U jJiCWit~c_i.» .-»__..» i«r-j ,T„ l,f that a trip to Kawau will soon be among the institutions of Auckland. Another cargo of wheat and flour arrived from San Francisco this morning, by the brig Galilee, for Messrs. Henderson and Macfarlane. Like transmigrating souls, journalism rarely dies, and when one newspaper has been extinguished, Phoenix-like another springs from its ashes. Our little sister that used to bear our name and twinkle nightly on the banks of the Thames, has scarcely sunk beneath the horizon, when lo 1 another luminary has arisen. The Mail, an evening penny paper, is from the oflice of the Thames Advertiser, and is owned by the same proprietors, Messrs. Corlett and Wilkinson. It is not large, but, as might be expected, it is exceedingly well got up; and while fairly supported by advertisers, contains a large amount of general news, and thoroughly readable matter. We cordially wish the Mail abundant success. The "West Coast Times" states that on Saturday morning some childern were playing in Stafford-street, when one got hold of a tomahawk, and in the course of playing managed to nearly cut off a finger of a child named Ross. Nothing connected the mutilated part.to the hand but a strip of skin, but Dr Dermott, to whom the little sufferer was taken, believes that he will be able to save the limb.
