The (Ecumenical Council continues its sittings, but is e^ idently a failure. The Fathers arc not so tracticable as .ras expected.
The Council has not come to a definite conclusion on any question. The Feast of the Epiphany passed off without the expected Papal decrees. The Syllabus was first submitted, and sent back to a Commission for revision.
The proclamation of infallibility is further off than ever. A petition in favour of the declaration of the dogma was signed by 400 bishops, and a counter memorial by Dupanloup was strongly supported. The Pope, evidently irritated, printed an admonition, which was circulated amongst the Fathers, enjoining secrecy and brevity of discourse, which caused a general outburst of resentment, and a protest from the liberal Catholics of Europe.
Munich has conferred the freedom of the city on Dr. Dottingen for ridiculing the petition of the Bishops to the Council in favour of declaring Pope Pius free from error. Several Fathers have quitted Eome.
