The new Ministry receives the confidence of the public and is regarded as really representative. It is supported by all parties except a small knot of irreconcilables.
The Emperor seems really to have accepted the new Constitutional system.
The Oileauists are rallying to the Empire under the new regime. The recent shooting case has been the great disturbing element. M. Ollivier's application to the Chambers for permission to presecute Eoehefort for inciting to revolt was agreed to by an immense majority ; but it has since been considered that the prosecution was a mistake. Eoehefort showed contempt of Court by not appearing at the trial. He was convicted and senlf ved to six months' imprL-onmenl and a fine i / #000 franrs. Eoehefort ridicules the lom'Acy of the sentence, but has lost favour among the violent classes through his cowardice.
The Ultra-Democratic journals are reviling etch other beyond mettsure. The trial of Prince Pierre Bonaparte is to take place at Versailles next month. The Prince was never recognised by the Imperial family. He "Wivs a man of savage temper aud sanguinary antecedents. The Prince declares that be was pcrvoked by a blow from Noir, * which iq denied by Noir's companion. The trtcj i e 3o f commerce are warmly discussed in bofcr. Chambers.
The Ministers consent to a Parliamentary inquiry, and till the results are before the country no change is to be made. Free-trade convictions are spreading and the arguments iised by Protectionists are that England supports the free-trade party in France.
Traupraan Was executed. He refused to the last to name hia accomplices. There has been a serious strike by the artisans in the great iron works at Creuset, instigated by an agent of the International Association, who supplied funds from England and Switzerland. 3500 soldiers were sent for the protection of the town, new Avorkmen were introduced and the strike terminated.
