RAGGED SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The committee appointed at the public meeting held on Monday evening last, to inaugurate a Ragged School Society, met yesterday afc the rooms of the Young Men's Christian Association, Wellesleystreet. 'ihe Bishop of Auckland presided, and there was a full attendance of members of the committee. Discussion ensued as to the name and objects of the Society, and the necessity for obtaining correct information of the extent of the evil to be remedied, preparatory to deciding upon any precise form of action, or asking the public for funds. With this view a resolution was carried, that it is necessary to obtain an account of the number of children within the city of Auckland between the ages of six and twelve who do not attend any day school, together with the occupation of their parents. We print the resolutions below. It was resolved to request his Honor the Superintendent to aid in obtaining this information, and to become one of the vice-presidents of the Society.
Proposed by Mr. A. Boabdman, and seconded by the Rev. J. T. W. Davies, 'That steps betaken to obtain a census of the children within the city of Auckland, above six and under twelve years of age, such information to include the occupation of parents, showing whether either or both parents are dead, the number of boy 3 being distinguished from the number of girl?, whether they attend day schools, and if any be criminals, and that his Honor the Superintendent be requested to give the aid ot the police in obtaining this census.' Proposed by Mr. W. Rattray, and seconded by the Rev. J. W. Deane, ' That information bo requested from his Honor the Superintendent as to whether there are any endowments available for the purposes of founding and maintaining an Industrial School and Reformatories.'
Proposed by Mr. Upton, seconded by Mr. Boabdman, • Thai the Secretaries be requested to invite his Honor the Superintendent to become Vice-President of the Association.'
Proposed by the Rev. J. W. Deane, and seconded by Mr. Q-. W. Owen, ' That Messrs. W. C. Daldy and Archibald Clark, with W. Ball anl G-. Thome, be requested to become members of the committee.'
Moved by the Eev. W. J. Deane, seconded by Mr. W. Ratxijay, ' That the thanks of this meeting be given to Mr. Sommervell for his kind offer in reference to the building in Durham-street, and that he be requested to defer action in the matter for the present.1
Proposed by the Key. J. T. W. Davies, seconded by Mr. W. Rattray, 'That the Secretary be requested to undertake all necessary expenses on behalf of the Committee.'
