PRODUCE MARKETS,
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report on the produce markets for the week ending Jan. 19, as follows:— Wool—ln the early districts shearing is fast drawing to a close, but on the back runs operations are in'full swing. Recent arrivals into stqre display the effects of the, hot weather experienced; hist month, Aimd the abundance'of "Teed everywhere prevailing, in the unusually heavy ednA dition of the- wool.v*-.J&-Bat.., interest' hhs been manifested in the auction sales held this week, which have passed off satisfactorily. In all about 4100 bales have'been offered, of which upwards of 2500 have, been placed under the hammer. or privately. In reference to the sale held by us On Wednesday, wja' have to report that we submitted the" largest catalogue ever offered in Canterbury. There was only a limited attendance ; but all present proved to be buyers; afld biddings were animated throughout. Every lot brought forward was well competed for, and considering the heavy condition, of the bulk of the wools offered, prices were extremely satisfactory.:: The quantity submitted, reached the respectable total of 1754 bales, of which l637.were placed, leaving.7l7 for future dispopal. made 7d to 10£ d; halfbred, 8d tp>9d ; cross-bred, 6|d to B|d ; Romney,Bd ji'Leh-ester, 7d ; scoured lamb, 9d; scdurtfd crossbred, lOfd to ll|d ; scoured merino locks, ls l|d ; scoured merino. U 7-fd. Choice merino received special attention. The brands making moßt money were : Buccleuch, from the Alford district, 67 bales at 10£ d ; Whiterock, from near Rangiora, 103 bales at 10|d; and Ashley Downs, 13 bales at lOd.
Wheat—The continuance of fine bright ■weather, highly* favorable to the crops, has hastened on the harvest, and the whole country side is now resonant with the hum of the ireaper and-binder. In the Wai para district" 80 per cent of the crops are seftared, and threshers are alreatrydiscloß--ing satisfactory results. Rust to a slight extent is reported from all districts, especially on the heavy lands, but from eaquiries instituted the effect will nowhere be serious. New wheat has been on offer during the week, but we have hot heard of business resulting. Farmers look for 3s 6d to 3s 9d at country stations, but buyers' limits'are'about 3s 4d to 3s 6d f.o.b. Prices will shprt'y be established, when we shall doubtless have heavy transactions to report, as the quantity of wheat for disposal exceeds that of any previous year. Oats—The harvesting of this cereal is •now well forward, with highly satisfactory results. Theerain is generaMy good.being heavjf., anrS Abright, -. though a thickness in theskin is v observable in some of the samples displayed. Sales have been effected at 25.3d f.0.b., but buyers are now disinclined to-opera tent over 2s. Old oats are offering at 2s"6d without meeting with ahy response."." Barley—Tiie rain of last week did- not improve the »rbps in stook, but as the quantity so affected was only 'trivial,-' no serious harm was done. The yield' per aero promises, well, which will probably compensate for the diminished area in crop, whilst the quality is expected to turn out excellent. The market has not yet opened. Buyers expect to supply their Wants at 3s 9d to 4s. Dairy Produce—Butter is in active request at 9£d to lOd f.0.b., but stocks are so limited that large Orders can only be placed with difficulty. Cheese is offering at Js_*d to 7d, with only a small deininn.
