AKAROA BOROUGH SCHOOL.
ANNUAL MEETING OP HOUSEHOLDERS.
There was a very good attendance of householders at the. meeting held last night, to elect a; new School Committee, according to the Act. Mr A. I. McGregor was elected Chairman of the meeting, Mr Henning apologising for Mr Westenra, Chairman of the late committee, who was prevented from attending through indisposition. BEPORT. The following report of the committee for tbe last year was read :— "Your Committee herewith furnish a statement of accounts for the past year, audited by Mr W. H. Hargreaves, showing a credit balance of £18 Is sd. Of this amount £4 2s is to the credit of the prize fund, and £13 19s 5d to the credit of incidental fund. The Committee have during the year received a contribution of £3 3a towards the prize fund, from Mr W. Montgomery. Prizes were given thisyear to the value of £4 13s 6d, and were awarded, as last year, from the Inspector's report. The average attendance for the quarter ending 31st December, 1881, was 76 ; .for<he• quarter ending 31st March, 1882, 103 ; June 30,104; September 30, 95 ; and December 31,93 54-90ths. This ' shows an increase; on- lact 1 year's Aattend-f. ance. The school has been, examined' twice during the year, oii 18th May and ; 27th September. The Committee have great pleasure in placing before you the Inspector's remarks:—• M.»f 18-i-Both in legard to discipline and attainments the school is in a slightly better state than it ' was on tbe occasion of my last visit. Sept. 27—This school shows considerable imptovement, the work generally being of a better quality than it was last year. The questions set on science were very well • .answered, and the papers =of iall classes exa.nined were neatly written and very accurate. ■ The school is aa well organised as the nature of the building;will admit, ' and good * order. is maintained.' Your Committee regret the loss they bave sustained by the departure of their late chairman (Rev. H. Stocker) from the district. .The following ib taken front s paper read -by the Rev. H- Stockerat a meeting of tho Committee held on 17th Aagupt. (This paper has already appeared in our columns.) Your Committee would also recommend to their successors the question of introducing some pystem for securing a better general attendance on tbe part of the children, by the giving of rewards in money or otherwise. The holding of occasional examinations would also fend, in your Committee's estimation, to keep up attendance and interest in work, both of which, under the present system, fall off after the Inspector's annual visit, which in this district occurs in September; three months before the Midsummer l term ends. . The Committee, has held 15 meetings, and the attendance of members has been as follows:—Bruce 13, Sims 13, Henning 12, McGregor 11, Stocker 9, Penlington 8, Westenra 5, Checkley 2." The statement ot accounts, duly audited by Mr Hargreaves, was then read. Mr Henning moved, and Mr Checkley seconded, that the committee's report and balance sheet, as read, be adopted, (carried unanimously). A hearty vote of thanks was passed to -^the-retirrng > committee. It out that though Mr Cbeckley's numbef-rCsf,.attendanceß appeared small he had really attended regularly as he had only been elected on the occasion of Mr Stpcker's -leaving^.., Mr O'Reilly moved, and Mr Rich seconded—"That the outgoing Committee be re-elected." Mr Billens moved, and Mr Kissell seconded —" Tbat there be a fresh election." The amendment, on being put, was carried. The following gentlemen were then nominated, viz., Messrs Henning, McGregor, Billens, Kissell, Westenra, Bruce, Checkley, Rich, O'Reilly, Gutberlet, Penlington, and Sims. The Rev. Mr Davidson and Mr Nicholls were appointed scrutineers. The following is the result of the election -—Kissell 14, Westenra 12, McGregor 11 Henning 10, Checkley 10, Rich 8, Billens 6, Bruce 6, O'Reilly 5, Penlington 4 Sims 3, Gutberlet 2. The first seven were elected, Mr Bruce retiring. It was quite explained that Mr Sims would have been elected had it not been for bis expressed wish not to stand this y This concluded the public meeting. Committee Meeting. At a meeting of the committee held subsequently, Mr McGregor in the chair, Mr Westenra waa elected Chairman .of the committee.
. It was agreed that the names of Messrs Tancred and H. R. Webb be submitted to the Board of Education as the members the Akfiroa committee desired to see on that Board. , It was arranged the regular meetings of the committee should beheld on the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m.» The meeting then adjourned.,.
