1 (From our own Correspondent.) A NEW YEAR'S FINE. Christchuiich, January 15. Otaway, a city boarding-house keeper, was fined £5 for se ling two nips of gin on New Year's Day. LYTTELTON SAILORS' HOME. The Mayor of Lyttelton is to lay the foundation of a Sailors' Home in port, a tender for which for £2460 pounds, from Lollett and Comber, was to-day accepted by tha Harbor Board. A NICE BONUS. Bell, the engineer for tbe graving dock, was voted a bonus of £250 by the Harbor Board in recognition of his work. THE FRISCO MAIL SERVICE. Representatives of the Pacific Mail Company have arrived to interview the Govvernment respecting the continuation of the San JFrancisco mail service. THE BARQUE DUNCRAIG. The barque Duncraig, 94 days from London, is at Wellington. ACCIDENT TO THE ST. KILDA. The St. Kilda broke down off Brighton, while on her way to Wanganui, at 10 o'clock last night. Tbe tug boat Despatch left to go to ber assistance. THE OTAGO PENINSULA ELECTION. At the Peninsula .omination, Messrs Donnelly, Larnach, Moran and Wells were proposed. The show of hands were largely in favor of Bishop Moran. SELLING HIS CREDITORS. In bankruptcy, Richard Thomas Waters, ex publican, had bis certificate suspended for three months for making a marriage settlement of some property when he was in insolvent circumstances. THE OTAGO DAILY TIMES AND BISHOP MORAN. Tbe Dunedin Times this morning, on the Peninsula election, says:—"While Bishop Moran is the representative and mouthpiece of the worst ecclesiastical tyranny in the world, be stands before a public audience and talks about civil and religious liberty. We say unhesitatingly that this is not a question of the rights of 70,000 Catholics, but of tbe aims and wishes of a tyrannous hierarchy, the head of which is tbe 'infallible' Pope himself." It concludes as follows :—" Let the State keep within its own secular functions, aud religion will flourish. Let it once step outside thoso functions, and pamper any religious body, and strife and bitterness, ' jealousy and hatred between sect and sect, { will be the inevitable consequence. We
say, then, to Bishop Moran, as we hope the electors of the Peninsula will say to him next Monday,' Hands off, rash prelate, hands off this ark of our liberties.'" The latest candidate, Mr Wells, has declared himself a strong and consistent opponent of the .present Government patty. He made numerous charges againpt the Government.
