AUCTIONEERS' REPORTS.

Messrs H. Matson & Co.. report on the Live Stock Market, &c., for the week ending Thursday. January 4th, 1882, as fol lows :—The opening sale of tho new year, held at Aldington on Wednesday last, was like those for bevernl weeks previous, via., sparsely'supplied with stock ; farmers, no doubt, at the present bein»- more interested in the commencement of harvest and its preparations than in mailers pertaining to stock. Between 3000 and 4000 sheep only of all clashes came lo hand yesterday, but these were chiefly lines of prime crossbred mid ton, and proved just sufficient for the 'day'Hi-equirenients. At Ihecomniericemcnt of lire aucrion rhe attendance was limited, and one or-1 wo oft he early lo's of sheep were withdrawn. These were, however, placed immediately after, and of our own entry, as of most of the others, there was scarcely " a sheep unsold—our' list beirig completely cleared. Of the lines calling for special mention the Longbeach wethers and those from the Acton Station stand first ; Messrs Fleming and Headley's, Alex. Broadfoot's, and P. Grant's, consignments being also remarkably-good. In light weights Messrs Moiten and White and Campbell and Co. penned some very nice sheep ; in fact, both lines- were just the weights suitable for the weather-. The Longbeach wethers—a magnificent lot of sheep—br'ougbtT2B 9d to 13s; Mess's Fleming and Headley's wethers lis 9d, Mr Broadfoots's 12s, Mr Grant's 12s 9d, Messrs Campbell and Co.'s ewes 10s 6d, the Mount Pleasant sheep 10s 6d and 10.s 9d, representing a very even and satisfactory list of values, though in case of the heaviest lines not quite np to 2d per lb. Of stores there were very few on offer, sales being made at late ruling- rates. Fat h.mbs represented a small entry, and prices nil through were marked by an advance of Is per head on last week's sides, 7s 6d to 8s being the'ruling quotations. In beef'there was an exceptionally small supply, every line that came under the hammer being readily placed at at a considerable advance on lute prices. Store cattle, though of a good class penned, did not command much attention, still we succeeded in placing privately and at auction about 120 head at prices showing but. little if any improvement on late values., The totals yarded for the day comprised 3505 sheep, 393 head of cattle, and 32 pigs.

Messrs R. Wilkin and Co. report:— There was a moderate attendance of buyers at tho weekly sale of sheepskins, which we held on Thursday i i our Now Zealand wool .stores. A slight depression was noticeable in the competition for crossbred woolly skin:-*, a few lots of which were passed in unsold. In other respects the prices realised were equal to last week's rates. Our catalogue comprised 1600 skins. Crossbred woolly skins, 4s Bd, 5i 4d, 6s; merino do do large, 4s Id to 5s 3d ; do do do, second quality, 2s 7i to 4s Id ; pelts, green, large and early shorn, lid to Is 5d ; do do small and late shorn, 2«. to lid .- lambskins, large, Is 5d to 10d ; d- , second quality, 7d io Is od. Fat and tallow— The trade was well represented, and there was a spirited competition ; 72 packages were catalogued, and all sold Fat, best quality clean and well saved, to 2j6 per lb ; second quality, to 2{d per lb ; inferior at Id per lb. Tallow, in small lots and according to quality, at l_-d to 2§d per

il>. Hides riot sold. Wool—Our third side of season 1882-83 will be hold on Tuesday, 16th inst.
