LITTLE RIVER ROAD BOARD.
The ordinary monthly meeting of this Board was held on the 4th inst. Present —All the members, Mr Forbes in the chair. The Clerk's report was considered, after which letters were read from Messrs Leister and Co., complaining of the state of the road leading through Dunford's Valley. Resolved, that as the present formed road is now entirely in the Hals - well district, this Board would refer Mr Leister to the Halswell Road Board. From the chief surveyor, forwarding plan of road through section 4264 as corrected. It was resolved that the Clerk wait on the chief surveyor to fully explain the Board's difficulties in regard to the survey of this road, with a view that he (chief surveyor) may be able to facilitate matters; also that the continuation of the old road may be pegged. From G. F. Stanbury, requesting that some attention may be given to the road leading to his place at Little River. Resolved, that the clerk see what is necessary to put it into passable repair. From , the Railway League, requesting subscriptions to pay the working expenses of said League, marked read. From Mr G. Reynolds enclosing account for partly carrying out his contract of fencing in Western Valley. It was resolved that Mr Wilson and the clerk inspect the work done, and report. From Government printer re tho appointment by the Board of pound-keeper at Little River. From Mr A. McPhail requesting that parts of the track leading to his place may be widened—near Island Bay. It was agreed that the Board is not just now in a position to comply with Mr McPhail's request. A petition from several of the residents in tb.3 neighborhood of Little River was received, requesting that Peter Johnson may be permitted to occupy his house as at present
situated for some time longer, as owing to poverty and having no plaoe to go to, he is not in a position to shift for some time longer. Resolved that he bo allowed to remain in his present quarters pending his search for another residence. Mr Grant waited on the Board requesting to be informed if the Board claimed ownership of the house now occupied by one Prendiville and situated on a road in Little River. Resolved that Mr Grant ba informed that the Board claim no ownership to said house, but being on a public road it will be necessary to have it removed within the time already specified by the Board if not previously done by whoever claims to be the owner. From the Engineer for constructed railways intimating that the level crossing at about 15 miles 58 chains on the railway applied for will be attended to. From the South Waimakariri Board of Conservators, inviting the members of this Board to an inspection of the works done along said river Waimakariri. Arrived too late for attention. Mr Gilmour waited on tho Board relative to the seeming inattention by those responsible for keeping clean the river Halswell, which is now rising rapidly owing to weeds. &c, and rerequested that as the Board pay half the cost of said work the matter might very reasonably be enquired into by them. Resolved that the Springs Road Board be informed of the above matter, and urged that early attention may be directed to the contract of keeping clean the river Halswell particularly from Manson'a lower bridge to the entrance of the first lagoon, and that special attention be called to the black weed which at this season causes obstruction to the flow of the river. From Inspector Pender, intimating that the local constable has been instructed to attend to the nuisance of cattle on the roads, &c. It was resolved that the Clerk attend to any necessary repairs to the main roads of the district, and that the matter of shingling the road from the Post Office jat Little River to the foot of the hill be postponed. That the Clerk be authorised to effect some slight repaira on the road leading to the new saw mills of Messrs Johnson, Wood, & Co. Tho building a bridge on the Western Valley road was postponed. It was resolved that the Clerk receive offers for the grass seed on any of the roads in the district within a fortnight, and that repairs to the road in Price's Valley be attended to. It was also resolved to apply to the Government, through the Chief Commissioner of Crown Lands at Christchurch, for five acres of land in the vicinity of Ahuriri, for the purposes of erecting there a pound and poundkeeper's house, as this Board have, through an oversight of the Provincial Government, | lost a reserve in this locality, as well as i many others in the district. Tbe following resolution was unanimously earned :— " That the various Road Boards of the ! County be written to, in order to ascertain their opinion as to the advisability of taking steps to suspend the operation of ' The Counties Act, 1876,' as at present constituted in this County, this Board being of opinion that as there is not sufficient work to warrant the expenditure of maintaining that body, all iU functions will henceforward be adequately discharged by. the chairmen of Road Boards and Town Boards of the County, as provided in clause 367. ' Tho Counties amendment Act, 1882.' " It was further resolved that a public meeting of the ratepayers of the district be convened, to meet at the office of the Board on Thursday, Jan. 4th, to take into consideration the following :— Ist. The financial position of the Board. 2nd. The abolition of the County Council. 3rd. The desirability of closing certain roads and selling the land. 4th. The propriety of subdividing the district. It was also resolved that all rates not paid before 31st Dec. be sued for. After passing accounts to the amount of £157 for payment, and transacting other business of a routine nature, the. Board adjourned to Jan, 4th. -- '
