Christchurch, December 7.
The observations of the transit of Venus are reported to bo most successful throughout the Colony. The notorious Michael Murphy was up to-day, wanting the Magistrate to send bis children to the Industrial School. Mrs Murphy objected, and a scene occurred, resulting in an adjournment of the case for an agreement to be made, whereby Murphy is to provide a home for his family and £2 per week for their support. A boy named Henry Clark, deformed, was charged with attempting to commit suicide by cutting his throat. Tho poor lad said he had found people who employed him turned him off on account of Ins bodily infirmry. His case was adjourned. The yacht Dove is again for sale by private tender. She leaves on Monday next for Akaroa, to take part in the Regatta.
The barque Annie Main from Liverpool, is at tho Heads.
Robert Ewing, for attempted arson at his own house at St Albans, was to-day committed for trial.
The inquest on Mary Berry will be purely of a formal character, as tho medical testimony will prove that she died from heart di pease.
At Wellington to-day, Mr Shaw, who appeared for the defendants in the illicit distillation cases, has in his possession a list of a dozen Wellington publicans who have been in the habit of receiving Porirua whisky at 12s per gallon and serving it to their customers.
The Hon W. Rolleston and the Under Secretary for mines visited the Terawhiti gold fields yesterday. They were pleased with the appearance of tho mines.
By Saturday's mail. Mr Feasor wrote to the authorities of the Free Church of Scotland, giving particulaeo of his suspension by the Presbytery, and asking that the Free Church should appoint a commission outside tho Christchurch Presbytery to enquire into the charges alleged against him.
