THE LONG DIVORCE CASE

Chkistchtjuch, October 30

Judge Johnston to day dissolved the marriage of Barman Long with Barmaid Long, but would not order costs to be paid by co -respondent Stokes. The case was heard last week, and the Judge hat! reserved judgment to satisfy himself that the parties had not agreed to separate, or colluded to get rid of the marriage vow bugbe.r. Neither Mrs Long nor tho redoubtable Stokes appeared at ail, the abused husband thus having it all his own way. FINES. Landlord George, of the Heathcote Anns Hotel, was fined £5 to-day for Sunday trading, the convicth.i* to cjo on his license. COMPENSATION. G-. li. Moore who sued the Government for compensation for land taken for railway purposes at the Weka Pass, was nonsuited because Judge Johnston found that the pioclamation of the Governor, which was supposed to give the Court power to hear the case, was erroneous and unintelligible. JUDGE FENTON'S SUCCESSOR. District Court Judge McDonald, of Auckland, has been appointed Chief J-.i.!ge of the Native Lands Court, vice Judge Fenton resigned. THE POKENO CASE. Long, Senior, whose son attempted to kill him by shooting, at Pokeno, near Auckland, has recovered from tho wound in his head sufficiently to be up and about the house.

SUDDEN DEATH AT TIMARU

Captain White, of Timaru, sail-maker, an old resident, died suddenly in tho Resident Magistrate's Court to-day. He was seized with an apoplectic fit, and died before medical aid arrived.

LATEST BY S.S. TE ANAU. Tne ship Northampton went ashore near Sydney. The vessel struck on the rocks near Point Hacking during the fog, She got off, but it was found that she was leaking. All hands were at the pumps during the night. After firing rockets for an hour, the steamers Dairymaid and Civility piloted her into Botany Bay, when she was beached m fifteen feet of water. All the immigrants, numbering 370 were brought safely to Sydney. On Sunday, at the Melbourne Police Court, Patrick Ryan, on remand since October 1, was charged with horse stealing in New Zealand. He was also charged, in company with his wife and daughter, with being an absconding bankrupt from Timaru. A detective has arrived from New Zealand, and the prisoner will probably be further remanded. Stanley, the celebrated explorer, was banqueted at Paris, on his return from his recent expedition in Central Africa. In the course of an interesting speech, he detailed his experiences in establishing trading station son the Congo. Tin- police authorities at Leicester bave effected an important seizure of Fenian documents in tbat town. They disclose the existence of a wide spread conspiracy, and show tbat the secret movements of the Fenian organisation are now being in a great| measure directed from England, where the wire pullers are less exposed than in Ireland to inspection and detection on the part of the authorities.
