DEATH OF COLONEL PACKE. CiißisTctiuncH, October 10 C Colonel Packe died to-day at his residence, Fendalltown.
THE WHITE HART INQUEST.
In the Wnite Hart inquest case, the jury to-day returned the following verdict: — "That the deceased Edward J. Biadbuni died from congestive apoplexy accelerated by the use of intoxicating liquors and the treatment received in connection with his removal from the White Hart hotel." The jur\ desire to add a strong vote of censure. SHIPPING. There is no word yet of the steamer Lalla Rookb, from Taranaki, Waitara, or Raglan. Something serious is feared. The brig Wave, in ballast, is ashore at Pelorous Sound. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE AT DUNEDIN. Jane Elizabeth Gray, twenty years of age, attempted to drown herself at the Ocean Beach, Dunedin, yesterday. A witness rescued her. TBE NEW HEBRIDES. The Dunedinites are petitioning the Queen to annex the New r Hebiides Islands, at the instance of tbe four Presbyterian missionaries there. THE CHRISTCHURCH DIVORCE COURT. The Christchurch sittings of the Divorce Court opened to-day. Judge Johnston granted a deciee nisi in the divorce case William Jamieson against Kate Louisa Jamieson, nee Payne. There was no appearance of Kate, and no co-respondent in the case. Jamieson was married in Christchurch six years since, having previously had a child by her. He had been absent at the West Coast wvo years and a half from his wife, during which time she had given birth to two children. In the case of Robert 11. Long, barman at the City Hotel, for dissolution of marriage with Annie nee Clark, a billiard maikcr named Stokes being co-respondent, His Honor reserved judgment until nest Monday. The respondent and co-respondent did not appear. A witness named A. S. Gilchrist, an accountant, was taken to task pretiy severely by the Judge for the manner ot giving his evidence. Counsel excused Gilchrist by saying he had had too much beer. THE LATE RUMOR. The rumor circulated lately that a gentleman well-known in musical circles was about to apply for separation from his wife is now denied. SCHEME OF COLONISATION. A movement is on foot in London by Eirl Shaftesbury and the Bishops of London, Liveipool and Sr. Asaph, Sir Penrose Julyan, Alderman MoArlhur, and others, to get 10 million acies of Native lands in New Zealand, and settle the same with colonists, tlie proceeds from sales or rentals to be invested for the Native owners. It is estimated the Maori owners woukl in 18 years be in the enjoyment of the interest on four million pounds.
