TRANSFER OF PRISONERS TO WELLING TON.
Fifteen long sentence prisoners from Lyitellon G>iol and live from Dunedin (xai)l went to Wellington to-day by the Minemoa.

Tlie (Ihrifitchurch Supine C;>urt sesion commenced to-day, with eight accused persons to dispose of. Mr Duncan congratulated Judge Johnston on his return, speaking for the Law Society, and Hie Honor expressed his thanks for the sympathy evinced. Alexander Clark, for forging nd uttering a cheque for £3, at Ashburton, on J. Osborne, fanner at the Hinds, got two ye us. Prank Henry Williams, railway cK-rk, for embezzling various sums amounting to £200, got 12 months. Mr Back gave him an excellent character, naying he had been in the department since 1877. His salary was £140 a year, though he Jiad passed from £12.000 to £15,000 through his hands annually. William Herbert Harding, for a laruei.y of £11 from John Connell, got two years. GOLD IN THE WAIKATO. A prospector in the Waikato country has found an alluvial gold Held in the Native country about Taupo.
DUNEDIN SUPREME COURT.
At Dunedin to-day His Honor Judge Williams, in his charge on opening the Supreme Court, dwelt exhaustively on the Papakaio murder case. No other cases on the calendar were touched upon. The following sentences were passed :—Edwin Marlow, Clerk in the Union Company, for embezzlement, three years. Win, Patrick Sharkey, nged 16, horse stealing, six months. Isabella Young, maliciously wounding, six .months. True bills were found in all the cases.
WELLINGTON SUPREME COURT. At the Wellington sessions to-day, Farrow, for larceny, got nine months. MR GEORGE DARRKLL. Mr George Darrell, the actor, has arrived at Melbourne per the Cotopaxi from England, after two year's absence. A RAID OM THE MELBOURNE PUBLICANS. The Customs authorities have instituted a crusade against vendors of spurious liquors in Melbourne. Many of the vendors have been heavily fined .for representing inferior stuff to be well-known brands.
