LOCAL GOVERNMENT.
To the Editor. Fir,—l find i>y criticising, in an idle moment, a stupid letter tlmt appeared in your valuable μ-ipor, I have drawn down upon mv devoted head a pcrlect torrent of at'USf , , stieii as conceited fool, toady, liar, larrikin, footpad, burglar, person who would not stick tit iin.ig hotels, &c; but the narrow egotism and iudicrnus selfcomuiaevney displayei in the epistle criticised, which seemed to presuppose that the only part of New Zealand of any import ance was contained within this boundaries of the Little liiver Road Board diMrici, was a temptation I could i>ot resist, and certainly it' Mr W.s efi'u-ions upon local government were not very instructive, they were vastly amusing, as giving an extremely local view of th;it question. But 1 must remind Mr Wilson that low abuse is not the best way of refuting 1 reasonable arguments and is generally the refuge of a person who finds himself in the wrong ; and on looking through Mr W.s reply, I cannot find that he has contradicted any of my statements. He declaies ;. made an onslaught, upon the Road Boards in the county. This I must contradict. I simply stated facts about two Road Boards, and asked, if these bodies were fit to hold greater power. I must plead guilty to the I charge of being facetious, bui the absurdity of a man, belonging to the now notorious Road Board, adversely reviewing the proceedings or." a reopen table body, was too much for my gravity, -i.d musl be my excuse. It •>■. ,;s indeed a case of a man in ;i gias-« hotitij nrowin.T stones. As regards the charge of plagiarism, I must inform Mr Wilson that, svriting for people I presumed to be rcn.-xiahly educated, 1 considered it superfluous t.- -'■'•' the name of Byron to one of the m< ,; !> -kneyed passages of liirf best known jowiu. I should as aoort have written vide Ke* restamunt after quoting Amen. The im rpoLitiou of Wilson, tin»iigij certainly not a poetical name, could acan.-ely he expected to disguise tiie Hiiiiliar &iyle, To show how far Mr Wilson can oe trusted as an authority upon county matters, he says tiie Counties Act is only in p.trtial operation in Akaroa, whereas the truth of tho matter is that it has beer; in adl force for ye.-irs. My excuse for writing anonymously is, that. I have no wish for tho honour of bandying übi.se with Air Wilson in my own name, and I am aiVtiid my friends Would object i if I had. I
To Mr Q ieaiy I must apologise, and am very sorry it' i Iμve hurt his feelings, and must liere state 1 have always heard of him as an able man, ami zealous in his duties. I will take his word that the books are ali
correct. lam afraid if 1 came to see them lie won'il give me a warm reception. I must also compliment him upon hia verse. He shoiiM he crowned noet laureate of Little River, with tlie title of the Road Board poet. I understand, lik" other* of our great pools, he lives on tlie edge of a lake, and no doubt the majestic view of its wide-spreading mud Hats, and the society of tha'cheerful swamp-hen, with its ever-varying - songf, hns intensified that genius which would, in any case, have lieen remarkable. Apologising for taking up so much room with my scrihble— Yours, etc.,
TOADY (late M)
