EACH IN ITS OWN GOOD TIME.

We must congratulate the members of the Horticulturcil jind Industrial Asso- ! ciation on their wisdom in altering the date of the Exhibition from the Anniversary to New Year's Day. The Regatta is such an all-absorbing affair, on the former occasion, that it is v mistake to try and divide popular sympathy with it, an 1 the obvious course is that adopted—to select another day. New Year's Day seems to us a suitable one. It is a general holiday, nn \ comes before grass-seeding has commenced, and, if proper attractions are held out, th re should be just as many pop/c in Akaroa that day as on the Anniversary. It is true that athletic sports have been held on that occasion in former years, but they were only patronised by a portion of the community. There is nothing, however, it seems to us, to prevent sports being also held on New Year's Day, if it is thought desirable, but we cannot help expressing an opinion that it would be wiser to confine ourselves to the Industrial and Horticultural Exhibition on that day, and strain every nerve to have a proper athletic gathering in Akaroa on the Quern's Birthday, which comes in the autumn, and is certainly the pr-per time to hold such a meeting. It is a great pity that we have not a branch of the Caledonian Society in Akaroa, to take the lead in these matters. The Caledonian gatherings in other parts of the Colony are always successes, both amongst largo and small communities, and they always attract plenty of competition from outside. Surely there are enough of those fro'n the " land o'cakes " residing on the Peninsula to take the initiatory steps ?
