(From oun own Correspondent.) RUMOR. Ci-kistchu-.ch, July 13. The commercial atmosphere in the city was greatly disturbed to-day by a rumor of ill omen concerning the position of a leading business firm. MR PILLIETT. Mr Pilliett, M.H.R. for Stanmore, left to-day for Parliament. TIIE CHATHAM ISLANDS CASE. The Chatham Islands shooting case is proceeding in the {Supreme Court, having commenced this morning. The prisouer, W- G. Jacobs, who is charged with having shot at his wife and her son, is defended by Mr Holmes, M.HR.. whose line of defence appeared to be that not the prisoner, but some one else, fired the shots. Ten witnesses for the prosecution came from the Chatham Islands. CURIO-US CASE. In the Exhibition Catalogue case, brought by E. F. Cogan against the promoters, for £200 damages, Judge Ward gave judgment for plaintiff for 40s and costs. HUNT CLUB. There was a fair attendance at the Hunt Club Steeplechase Meeting, which went off well. The results are:— The Hunt Club Cup (Handicap). Mr C. A. Jefferson's br g Leap Year, aged, list 71b 1 Mr P. H. Duncan's b g Winfald. aged, 18st 51b 2 Mr F. Whitcornbe's g m Forsaken, aged, lOstO.b 8 This was a splendid race, and was won only by half a length. The Gone Away Stakes. Mr D. O'Brien's b g Trovatore, 4 yrs, lOst 41b, 1 Mr H. Casshly's I.lk g Levant, aged, lOst 01b 2 Mr J. Adams' br h Kosciusko, 5 yrs, lOst 3 Won by a length, after a good race. The Tally Ho Plate. Mr P. 11. Duncan's hrg Terry, aged 1 Mr H. Piper's b g Locks and t'ieees, 4 yrs 2 Mr W. 11. Nc. ton's b m Kinglet, aged 3 Only the three were placed in the race, which was fairly close at the finish. Won by two lengths. MAORI NEWS. Tawhaio has arrested Winiata's father to prevent that foolish man getting himself into trouble by taking vengeance on the pakchas. GOVERNOR HOBSON'S TOMB As the relict of the late Governor Hobson has £20,000 worth of property in Auckland, the Herald considers the Governor's tomb in the Auckland cemetery ought to be kept in order without the colony being asked to do it, FATAL ACCIDENT. A man named Edwin H. Furby, ! resident of Motua, near Foxton, was killed by a falling tree in Fitzherbert bush yesterday. MR DELATOUR. In the Wellington Supreme Court, Mr Travers made application for Mr Delatour to be admitted as a solicitor and barrister, After argument the application was referred back for further information. THE HON. MR SCOTLAND EXPLAINS. The hon. Mr Scotland who said that obscene language was used by members in the lobbies was seen by Mr Vincent Fyke. For an explanation, the hon Lord is said to have weakly explained that he meant the members of the Council only. I OF THE COLONY. The cabinets are considering the defence question with a view to giving immediate effect to Col. Scratchley's recommendations.
