WOOL, GRASS SEEDS, & DAIRY PRODUCE.

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report as follows : — Wool.—The daily telegrams in reference to the progress of the current series of sales in London are scanned with eager interest, and, though tbe tenor of advices is generally satisfactory, there is a large and important secion of the coinmuoity (fanners who confine their pastures to the growth of heavy slieep) disappointed with thu weak aspect of the market for coarse long wools. This feature of the trade is an important one to New Zealand, for since it has been demonstrated by the success of the Dunedin's shipment that heavy sheep ate most in favor at Home, it becomes a necessity to breed this class oi Btock, irrespective of the value of its wool. There is, therefore, every prospect of coarse wools forming a large proportion of our exports in tbe future. Cluistchurch—Transactions during the month have been confined to the auction aales which were bed on the 13th and 14th inst. At these (the last of the eeason) 859 balea were submitted, including the whole recovered from the stranded ship City of Cashmere, when 794 hales were sold, at prices fully sustaining our quotations, only 65 being withdrawn. Our catalogue comprined 275 bales of varied descriptions. 252 bales greasy merino found buyers at B_-d to 9|d ; crossbreds realised Bjd to9£il ; scoured merino, Is 7£d; scoured crossbred, 8d to Is s£d ; greasy lambs, Bd. Auckland—A tew sin.'tll odd lots have been sold at auction, and realised in grease 6£d to 7£d per lb. Wellington—Only sales to report are parcels of coarse dingy lamba at 7£d per lb. Napier—During the month 142 biles have been sold, at prices varying from Is to Is 6£d for scoured locks and pieces, and la o£d to Is B|d for scoured fleece wool. Giuss Seeds.—Christchurch—The demand for spring sowing has not yet developed itself ; there is, therefore but little trade passing. From the firm attitude of holders, however, there is every probability of prices hardening as soon as orders are placed npon tho market. Quotations for rye grass are nominally 4s 6d for farmers' lots, 5s 3d to 5s 9d for welldressed parcels in the hands of seed merchants. Cocksfoot is not procurable under 5d f.o.b. Dunedin.—Grass Seed—The season being over, we do not insert quotations. Invercargill—A large quantity of rye graes is tieing held, owing to the low prices current, viz., 4a 4d to 4s 6d f.o.b. Timothy has been Hold at Bii for town delivery. Napier.—Rye Grass—Small sales have been made during the month, at from 4s for medium to 5s 3d for fine quality. Cocksfoot—Very little doing ; we quote s|d per ib here. Oainaru—The market is at a standsiii. and there is no speculation. Miscellaneous. — Cuiistehurch — Butter —Under tbe influence of strong competition amongst buyers for Melbourne account, prices advanced within a week from 10d to 14d per lb. Between these figures some important transactions were carried through, and the market closes firm at the higher rate for parcels f.o.b. This sudden enhancement in value caused several lines intended for shipment per Mataura to be diverted; that vessel therefore cleared from Port Chalmers with only 55 kegs and 2 caaee on board. Cheese haa had moderate attention at 5d per lb. Potatoes—The excitement prevailing in this tuber when last we wrote was not of long duration — long, enough, however, to enable farmers to quit their crops at Bss to 38* at country stations. Shipments to Sydney and Newcast'e have been bo extensive as to completely break down the markets _ there, which has naturally reflected on this, and produced a reaction. The market closes weak at 50s f.0.b., bags extra. Oainaru — Potatoes aro very firm, and bulks are being rapidly bought up. Wellington—Salt Butter—9£d to 10d per lb. PotatoesBlue Derwents, £2 12s per ton ex store. Auckland—Potatoes have been freely dealt with for shipment to Sydney, 65s to 70s has been prvid, but tho market is now decidedly easier.
