Hutchison's evidence bill provides that a husband or wife charged with any offence shall be competent, but not compelled to give evidence whether for or against himself or herself, or for or against each other, provi led if such person shall have voluntarily given his evidence in the initiative proceeding, he or she shall be not only competent, but compellable to give evidence in all further proceedings. When a person on trial shall be examined, all questions are to be asked only through the presiding judge or magistrate. It is understood that the Government will not otter an} opposition to the Bill, although it will probab y give rise to a wordy debate on the part of the legal men-ber*- of the House.

The supposed burglars in the recent burglaries in Christchurch, W. Anderson and Edward Longmore, were charged today with breaking into Montague's shop, Wilkinson's hoot shop, and Lake's stationery shop. As tbey are believed to be confederates with the Dean's shootist they were remanded for eight days. A prohibitive order against publicans' supplying John Durham, an old Lyttelton waterman, was granted to day upon his wife's application.

The exhibits at the Agricultural show to-day of fat cattle were very good. Messrs S. Garforth and John Ferguson were the largest exhibitors. A digger named Sayers fell off the steamer Fiugall at Auckland to day and was drowned.

Tbe Select Committee on Mr Pilliett'a case met to-day and meet again to-uiorrow when they report to the House. The feeling is geneial that the disabilities he incurred will be removed and new writ will be issued for the Stanmoie electorate.

The Hon John Hall and members E. G. Wright and Fulton left to-day for Wellington.
