FIIIE BRIGADES. CmusTCiiuncH, May 18. The Fire Brigade procession in Christ-

church was a grand success to-night. Nino brigades took part, besides the bands

of music. The night was especially good for torch lights, and this auxiliary to the Exhibition has eclipsed anything hitherto tried for bringing , out the people. MR SEDDON IN CO CRT. Mr Seddon, M.IJ.R. for Kutnara, was fined £1 yesteiday for contempt of court, and would have gone to gaol but for the interference of fneods. SLY GROG SELLING. At Amberley, Muller, a storekeeper was fined £oO to-day for exposing grog for sale without a license. OPENING OF PARLIAMENT.

Pailiatne/it was opened at 2 o'clock by commission. The commission having been read, Sir W. Fitzherbert stated that at 2 p.m. to morrow His Excellency would attend to disclose his reas-ons for calling the session together On the members re-assembling in the House the commission was read, authorising Major Campbell to swear in members. The following member were then sworn :— Messrs George Hurst, Nutehison, Peacock, Sir G. Grey, Dargaville, Swanson, Sir G. M. O'Uooke, Hamlin, Cardnan, Whyte, Morris, and Whitaker. The swearing is still going on. END OF THE KING'S MEETING. The King's meeting at Alexandra, of which so much was expected, terminated yesterday, the residuum whereof was that Paul of Orakei advocated a Native newspaper. He had collected £25, £8 of which Rewi subscribed.

Mr Pilliett was sworn in to-day as member for Stanmore without objection.
