GERMAN BAY STEEPLECHASES.
A very we!! attended meeting of the gentlemen who have been endeavoring to get 'ip the German Bay Steeplechases was held on Tuesday evening last at the Madeira Hotel. Mr Lyon occupied the chair. The minutes having been read, the Hon. Secretary, Mr McGregor, stated that the entries he had received for the various events were as follows :—
Handicap Steepleoaase. Mr J. Judge's Brown Boy Mr J. Sun'jkell's Isis Mr J. Trueman'B Inkerman Mi Fleming's Ada Maiden Steeplechase. Mr Anguste Lelievre's Larrakin Mr A. 11. Fleming's Ada Mr J. Siinckell's Isis Mr Fleming's Warrior County Handicap Steeplechase. Mr A. K. Fleming's Ada Mr J. Judge's Brown Boy They would thus see that the only additional entries since last meeting were Mr Fleming's Ada for the big handicap, and the same gentleman's Warrior for the Maiden. A long discussion ensued, very general disappointment being expressed at the paucity of entries. It was pointed out that the County Handicap had already fallen through, there being only two entries, and that there were only four horses nominated for each of the other events, so that if the weights did not owners there would be no races at the circumstances, and not seeir.JHeat they could take the public nion there was such a poor prospect of o good day's sport, the great majority were of opinion the meeting should be given up for this season.
Mr O'Reilly said ho was still in favor of trying to carry it out, as he believed there would be a good hack race as well as the two handicaps and the Consolation. The Chairman said they had only three courses to pursue, the first one of which was to postpone the entries atill farther, (cries of no, noj well he thought it was too late in the season for such a proceeding. The second was to carry on the races with the present entries, and he must say in this he agreed with the majority, in thinking there was little prospect of giving the public a good day's sport, and there was a good chance of their falling through altogether after the weights were declared. The third, and in his opinion the wisest, was to postpone the meeting altogether to a more suitable date. Dr Singleton and Messrs Sunckell, Kissel and others pointed out that certain expenses had been incirred, which would have to be liquidated. The Hon Secretary, Mr McGregor, stated that he believed £20 would be required to pay the existing liabilities. Mr Kissel then moved—"That the Stewards of the German Bay Steeplechase club, on account of the few nominations, resolve that the meeting of Bth June be postponed till next season, and that the Chairman, Treasurer, Hon. Secretary, and Mr H. C. Jacobson be authorised to take steps to pay the outstanding accounts now incurred." Seeunded by Dr Singleton and carried. After a vote of thanks to the chair the meeting adjourned.
